- A first for St. Paul's....
As the first female senior pastor at St. Paul's, it is important for me to offer relevant information about the ordination of women in light of scripture and our Methodist tradition. My hope is that this letter will bring further enlightenment to this important dialogue! Content courtesy of Ask The UMC , a ministry of United Methodist Communications. Clergywomen have been part of Methodism since John Wesley licensed Sarah Crosby to preach in 1761. Although women were ordained in the Methodist tradition as early as the late 1800s, it was the May 4, 1956 General Conference vote for full clergy rights that forever changed the face of ordained clergy. The United Methodist Church continues to declare its belief in the full equality of women and the importance of women in decision-making and leadership positions at all levels of the church. In her Commentary, Women in Ministry, Rev. Joy 3. Moore offers helpful insights related to the seemingly prohibitory scriptures against the leadership of women in the church: "In all of Christian scripture, the only text that explicitly sets the limit on all women to be silent is 1 Timothy 2:11. The verse, if taken literally, actually contradicts the chapter, which is addressing public prayer. Men are instructed to pray without anger and doubt, and women are similarly instructed to be decent and modest in appearance. While the instructions for public prayer to men refer to attitude, the directive to women specifies outward appearances (which reflects inner attitudes). I am inclined to consider this single limiting instruction in the context of the many directives throughout scripture encouraging believers to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ. In the context of first century Judaism, a directive to let women learn was not only counter-cultural, but a revolutionary notion that would effectively double the number of witnesses of Jesus Christ to all the world. Whereas previously tradition forbade women from even being taught the scriptures, this text grants women the opportunity to learn in the same manner as men who previously had little knowledge of a subject. Some teachers then, such as Pythagoras (for those who know Greek teachers), even required long periods of silence probably as a form of moral discipline. The Greek word translated as silence used in 1 Timothy is otherwise used to mean respectful attention or quiet demeanor rather than imposing total silence. The same word is used in verse 2 of this same chapter to exhort the whole church to lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. Most people consider the texts in Corinthians directing married women to wear head coverings as a specific cultural instruction. Similarly, the directive that married women cannot speak publicly at all seems excessive as an instruction for all times and all Christian assemblies. Silence in this portion of Scripture is related to ordering worship, not restricting half of the body of Christ to total public silence" To read the full commentary, visit https://www.umc.org/en/content/commentary-women-in-ministry Other resources are available at https://www.umc.org/en/content/ask-the-umc-why-does-the-united-methodist-church-ordain-women. I am continually blessed and grateful to serve as your Senior Pastor and look forward to the continued work of ministry alongside each one of you. Peace, Rev. Mary Ward
- Living by the Spirit: Embracing the Mission of the United Methodist Church
This inspiring image highlights the core mission of the United Methodist Church: to form disciples of Jesus Christ who are empowered by the Holy Spirit. It emphasizes three vital qualities— loving boldly, serving joyfully , and leading courageously —that define a committed follower of Christ. These principles serve as a guiding light for individuals and communities alike, reminding us that faith is active and transformative, not passive. The United Methodist Church focus on local engagement and global connections underlines its dedication to making a tangible difference in the world through love and service. The message invites us to reflect on our personal faith journey and our role within the larger community of believers. Are we living boldly in our love for others, regardless of circumstance? Do we approach our service with joy, seeing every act of kindness as a reflection of God's grace? Leading courageously calls for stepping out of comfort zones and advocating for justice and compassion. Each of these qualities is a call to action, urging us to embody Christ’s teachings in our daily lives and interactions. Moreover, the emphasis on empowerment by the Holy Spirit reminds us that faith is not solely based on our strength but on divine guidance. It challenges us to seek the Holy Spirit’s presence in every decision, conversation, and act of service. This reliance on spiritual empowerment fosters humility and dependence on God's grace, ensuring that our efforts are rooted in genuine love and purpose. Our faith then becomes a source of inspiration and strength, enabling us to face challenges with resilience and hope. This reliance on spiritual empowerment fosters humility and dependence on God's grace , ensuring that our efforts are rooted in genuine love and purpose. The new vision statement also prompts us to consider the importance of community—both local and global—in our spiritual walk. The church’s mission and vision extends beyond individual growth; it is about building connections that transcend borders and cultures. When we serve and lead with love and courage, we contribute to a more compassionate and just world. These actions ripple outward, inspiring others to join in the mission of Christ and creating a chain of hope and renewal. Leading courageously calls for stepping out of comfort zones and advocating for justice and compassion. As we reflect on this powerful message, let us ask ourselves: How am I embodying love, service, and courage in my daily life? In what ways can I deepen my reliance on the Holy Spirit to guide my actions? How am I contributing to my local community and the global church’s mission? And finally, how can I inspire others to join me in living out these core values of the United Methodist Church as a United Methodist? These questions challenge us to live intentionally and faithfully, making a difference one step at a time. - Live Out Love
In February, our hearts naturally turn to love. Valentine’s Day often takes center stage this month, but as followers of Christ, we know that love is far more than a romantic sentiment. Love is the foundation of our faith, the heartbeat of God’s relationship with us, and the calling that shapes how we live and serve in community with one another. In 1 Corinthians 13, often called the “ Love Chapter, ” the Apostle Paul reminds us what love is and what it is not. Love is patient and kind. Love is not envious or boastful, arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful. Love rejoices in the truth, bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things. These words serve as a guide for how we can embody God’s love in our daily lives. This February, I encourage each of us to reflect on how we are living out this Christ-centered love. Love is the foundation of our faith, the heartbeat of God’s relationship with us , and the calling that shapes how we live and serve in community with one another. Are there relationships in your life where patience and kindness are needed? Is there a truth you need to speak or a burden you can help bear for someone else? How can St Paul's grow in Real Love for one another? As we ponder these questions, let us also look ahead to the Season of Lent , which begins just as we flip the calendar in March. Lent invites us into a time of reflection and renewal during this sacred season and an opportunity to draw closer to God as we journey with Christ toward the Cross and the empty tomb. This is a time to reflect the sacrificial, redeeming, and life-giving love of Jesus. May this month be a time of spiritual growth and deepening relationships, both with God and with one another. Know that I am praying for you and am grateful for the ways God’s love shines through you as we serve together as the body of Christ. Blessings and Peace, Joe Marshall, Pastor

- Embracing New Beginnings and God's Promises for the New Year
As the calendar turns to a new year, we find ourselves on a path of transformation. This moment is not just about changing dates but about embracing a fresh start offered by God's grace. The new year invites us to reflect on His faithfulness throughout the past months and to step forward with hope into the future He has planned for us. Time is a precious gift, and with it comes the chance for renewal, growth, and a deeper connection with our Creator. Reflecting on God's Faithfulness in the Past Year The past year has been a journey filled with both joys and challenges for many of us. Each experience, whether uplifting or difficult, has shaped who we are today. In moments of celebration, we have felt God's presence lifting our spirits. During times of hardship, His strength has carried us through when our own resources fell short. Take a moment to recall specific instances where you noticed God's faithfulness. Perhaps it was a time when a prayer was answered unexpectedly, or when a difficult situation resolved in a way that brought peace. These moments serve as reminders that God’s guidance is constant, even when the path ahead seems unclear. Examples of God's faithfulness include: Finding peace during a stressful season through prayer and community support. Experiencing healing or restoration in relationships. Receiving unexpected provision during financial difficulties. Discovering new opportunities that aligned with God’s purpose for your life. Recognizing these blessings builds a foundation of gratitude. This gratitude strengthens our faith and prepares us to embrace the new year with confidence. Committing to Spiritual Growth and Renewal A new year offers a natural opportunity to renew our commitment to living according to God's will. This means more than setting resolutions; it involves a heartfelt decision to seek His wisdom, extend His love, and grow in faith. Seeking God’s Wisdom Making decisions with God’s guidance requires intentional prayer and reflection. It means asking for clarity in everyday choices and trusting that He will lead us on the right path. Consider setting aside regular time for Bible study and meditation to deepen your understanding of His word. Extending God’s Love Living out God’s love means reaching beyond ourselves to serve others. This could be through acts of kindness in your community, volunteering at your church, or simply offering a listening ear to someone in need. Small, consistent actions reflect God’s heart and make a meaningful difference. Growing in Faith Faith grows when we step out of our comfort zones and trust God in new ways. This might involve joining a small group , participating in serving or volunteering in church ministries, or sharing your testimony with others. Each step strengthens your relationship with God and encourages those around you. Take your Next Step today! A peaceful sunrise over a church garden representing hope and renewal Embracing God’s Promises for the Year Ahead God’s promises are a source of hope and strength. They remind us that no matter what challenges arise, He is with us, providing peace and guidance. As you look ahead, hold onto these truths: God promises to never leave or forsake us ( Hebrews 13:5) . He offers peace that surpasses understanding ( Philippians 4:7 ). His plans for us are for good, to give hope and a future ( Jeremiah 29:11 ). He strengthens us when we are weak ( Isaiah 40:29 ). Trusting these promises allows us to face uncertainty without fear. It encourages us to take bold steps, knowing God’s hand is upon us. Practical Ways to Live Out God’s Promises This Year To make the most of this new beginning, consider practical ways to integrate God’s promises into your daily life: Start each day with prayer , asking God to guide your thoughts and actions. Keep a gratitude journal to record moments of God’s faithfulness. Set spiritual goals , such as memorizing scripture or increasing your involvement in church activities. Reach out to others with kindness and support, reflecting God’s love in your community. Practice forgiveness , freeing yourself and others from past hurts. These steps help transform faith from abstract belief into lived experience. Reflection Questions to Guide Your Journey As you embrace this new year, take time to reflect on these questions: What is one way you saw God’s faithfulness in your life over the past year? What is one spiritual goal you hope to pursue in this new year? How can you more actively live out God’s love in your community this year? Answering these questions can clarify your intentions and inspire meaningful action. Walking Forward with Hope and Purpose The new year is a gift filled with possibilities. With God’s promises as our foundation, we can move forward with hope, courage, and a renewed sense of purpose. Each day offers a chance to begin again, to grow closer to God, and to serve others with love. Let this year be marked by a deeper faith, stronger community ties, and a heart open to God’s leading. Trust that He will provide the strength and wisdom needed for every step. Embrace this new beginning with confidence, knowing that God’s promises are sure and His love never fails. Together, we can walk into the future He has prepared, ready to live fully and faithfully.

- A Devotional: Summer Skies
Psalm 19:1 "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. " As the warmth of summer surrounds us, it is a wonderful time to embrace God's creation and renew our spirits. Psalm 19:1 reminds us, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." This verse invites us to marvel at the beauty of nature as a testament to God's creativity and majesty, encouraging us to find moments of awe and gratitude in our daily lives. Summer offers an opportunity to slow down, enjoy God's handiwork, and deepen our connection with Him through outdoor worship, reflection, and prayer. Let us open our hearts to God's presence in the vibrant world around us, allowing His glory to inspire and uplift us during this season. In this season of abundance, we are called to recognize the blessings we often overlook. Just as the summer sun sustains growth and life, God's love nurtures our spirits and sustains us through life's challenges. Take time to reflect on how God's creation and His blessings surround you daily, and consider ways you can share His love with others in your community. Summer also invites us to be intentional about rest and renewal—both physically and spiritually—so we can return to our routines refreshed and recharged in faith. By embracing God's gift of summer, we renew our commitment to live with gratitude, kindness, and purpose. As we enjoy longer days and warmer evenings, let us remember that God's light shines brightest in us when we share love and compassion with those around us. Summer can be a season of service, outreach, and strengthening bonds within our church family and community. Whether through acts of kindness, hospitality, or simply listening to others, we can be vessels of God's love in tangible ways. This season reminds us that God's light dispels darkness and that we are called to reflect His goodness in all our interactions. In doing so, we participate in God's ongoing work of reconciliation and hope. In this season of abundance, we are called to recognize the blessings we often overlook. Just as the summer sun sustains growth and life, God's love nurtures our spirits and sustains us through life's challenges. Finally, as we reflect on this summer season, let us pray for guidance, strength, and renewed faith. May we be inspired by God's creation to live intentionally, love generously, and serve faithfully. Let us also seek God's presence in every moment, recognizing that His grace sustains us and invites us into a deeper relationship with Him. May this summer be a time of spiritual growth and joyful discovery, rooted in the knowledge that God's love is everlasting. 🙏Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the beauty and wonder of Your creation that surrounds us this summer. Help us to see Your glory in the skies, the trees, and all living things, and to be grateful for the blessings You pour into our lives. Illuminate our hearts to love and serve others, reflecting Your light in our words and actions. Strengthen us in our faith and guide us to grow closer to You each day. May this season be a time of renewal, joy, and deeper connection with You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen. 🤔 Reflection Questions: 1. How can I more intentionally recognize and appreciate God's creation during this summer season? 2. In what ways can I share God's love with others around me this summer? 3. How can I use this time of longer days and warmth to deepen my spiritual journey? 4. What steps can I take to rest and renew my faith during this season of abundance?
